One of the main reasons divers visit the Nusa islands is to see the mysterious Mola, also commonly known as the Ocean Sunfish. The Mola is native to tropical and temperate waters.  The Mola is seen in high frequency, here in the Nusa Penida Marine Park, between the months of July and October. During the months from July to October, the water temperature around Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan & Penida drops. This is due to the colder deeper waters from the Southern Ocean pushing up into the Indonesian Seas. It is possible to see the Mola outside of these months but it is rare.

The mysterious Mola is a unique fish. It is the largest bony fish in the World. The heaviest specimen on record was caught off Kamogawa, Chiba, Japan, in 1996; It weighed 2,300 kilograms (5,070 pounds) and measured length 2.72 metres (8 feet 11 inches). The Mola has a flattened oval disk shaped body. The Mola’s spinal column contains fewer vertebrae and is shorter in relation to the body than that of any other fish. The extended dorsal and anal fins produce propulsion in a sculling like action to drive the enormous body. The Mola does not have a caudal (tail) fin but instead has a Clauvus which acts like a rudder.

The genus Mola belongs to the Molidae family. There are three species of Mola; Mola alexandrini, Mola mola and Mola tecta. Mola alexandrini is the Mola that is most frequently seen in the waters around the Nusa islands. It’s distinguishing features are; it has a spotty colouration with a scalloped shaped clauvus. The Mola mola has a hug head and chin bump. Mola tecta, also known as the ‘hoodwinker’ mola, as it was recently discovered in 2017, can be identified by the slit on it’s clauvus. Mola tecta has a slight bump on it’s head and chin. Molas also have bumps behind the pectoral fin, these bumps look different on each species, but you need to put under a microscope to tell them apart. The other members of the Molidae family are the ocean sunfish; Masturus lanceolatus, also known as the ‘Sharpetail’ mola as it possesses a sharp tail projecting from it’s clauvus. Ranzania laevis, the ‘Slender’ sunfish, is the smallest and arguably the most beautiful. It has the most colourful, smoothest and thinnest skin of all the members of the Molidae family.

The most common Mola behaviours observed in the local marine park is both the Mola cleaning and rewarming behaviours. There are many Mola cleaning stations around the Nusa Penida Marine Park. The most famous cleaning stations are found at Crystal Bay, Blue Corner and SD (Sekolah Dasar) dives sites. This is where the Molas come to be cleaned by the reef fish. Up to 54 species of parasites may reside on the skin of the Mola and internally. The bannerfish, emporer angelfish and butterfly fish clean the Mola. This is a symbiotic relationship; the Mola gets cleaned and the reef fish get feed. If the water temperature is cold and you see bannerfish, emporer angelfish and butterfly fish schooling together just off the reef, there is a high probability that you can see a Mola. Seagulls also clean the Molas. The Seagulls eat the larger copepod type parasites on the Mola’s body.  As the Mola lay on it’s side on the surface of the water, the seagull can rest on the Mola’s body and pick at the parasites.

Another behaviour displayed by the Mola is their rewarming behaviour. Mola’s can dive to depths of over 600 meters. The water temperature at these depths can be icy cold. Prolonged periods spent in water at temperatures of 12 °C (54 °F) or lower can lead to disorientation and eventual death. The Mola is believed to thermoregulate. The Mola lays on their side on the water’s surface soaking up the Sun’s rays on their large surface area or stay in shallower warmer waters after less deep dives. Interestingly, sunfish are able to warm their bodies so effectively that scientists suspect there are underlying adaptations we have yet to discover. This is further supported by the fact that large sunfish lose heat slower than small ones.

The LDC team hope that you have found our blog article interesting and informative. If you would like to find out further information about the Mola or diving in the local area, please do not hesitate to contact us; [email protected] We look forward to your visit to Lembongan Dive Center to come dive with us to see the mysterious Mola. Stay tuned for more information on ‘The Life of the Mola’ to come in the future.

PADI

All PADI courses are taught precisely to PADI guidelines – we don’t cut corners and we don’t believe in rushing people. The students dictate the pace. Training takes place in a pool or in the confined waters of Lembongan Bay, with a maximum ratio of four students to one instructor. Most of our courses are conducted with a ratio of one instructor to one / two students.

1. Discover Scuba Diving (beginner)

Discover Scuba Diving – no experience necessary. Give diving a try and add another dimension to your life. We will take you on a shallow dive in beautiful Lembongan Bay, so that you can experience for yourself the magic of the underwater world. With a maximum of two participants per Instructor, we will ensure that your first diving experience is as safe and comfortable as possible.

Following a short briefing about safe diving techniques and equipment use, we transfer you to our purpose built diving boat. We’ll take you to one of our local sites with ideal conditions, to enjoy your underwater experience! After donning your Scuba gear, you will be ready to take your first breaths underwater. We will then have you complete a couple of skills to make you feel more comfortable. You’re now ready to descend and start your underwater adventure tour!

One dive not enough? No problem, we can take you on a second dive to another of the area’s best dive sites. Or why not become certified and credit this dive towards the PADI Open Water course.

Maximum depth 12m
Dive time approx 45 mins

Capture your dive with under water camera available upon request

2. PADI Open Water Diver

If you’ve always wondered what lies beneath the surface, now’s the time to find out. Start the journey of a lifetime with the PADI Open Water course.

  • • Knowledge Development – 5 Sections. Watch the DVD, read the book, answer the questions, complete the quiz. Your PADI Instructor will help clarify any problems during classroom sessions.
  • • Confined Water Dives – There are five confined water dives, with each building upon the previous. Over the course of these five dives, you attain the skills you need to dive in open water.
  • • Open Water Dives – After your confined water dives, you move to the ocean for 4 exciting dives, where you continue learning with your PADI Instructor. This is where you have fun putting it all together and fully experience the underwater adventure.

Schedules – The PADI Open Water course is incredibly flexible and performance based, which means we can offer the program on a wide variety of schedules, paced according to how fast you progress. It’s possible, with pre-reading to finish the course in as little as 3 days, however usually we opt for a more relaxed approach and most people complete in 4-5 days.

PADI Open Water Course includes the OW Diver Manual, Certification application, and equipment use.

PADI eLearning gives you:

  • • Convenient online access to knowledge development course material for one year
  • • Unrestricted access to an online version of the PADI Open Water Diver Manual
  • • Learning at your own pace and on your own schedule.

After you complete all segments, you can print your eLearning record and come to Lembongan Dive Center to complete your training and start the next phase in your underwater adventure.

3. PADI Advanced Open Water

Move up and experience real adventure with the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course. As you step beyond the PADI Open Water Diver level, you make five dives and have the opportunity to try some of diving’s most rewarding and useful specialty activities. The Advanced Open Water Diver course takes you one step closer to becoming a Master Scuba Diver – the ultimate non professional certification in recreational diving.

With your PADI Instructor you complete the deep and underwater navigation Adventure Dives. These dives boost your confidence as you build these foundational skills. Then, you choose three additional dives from:

  • • AWARE – fish identification
  • • Night diving
  • • Boat diving
  • • Peak performance buoyancy
  • • Deep diving
  • • Search and recovery
  • • Drift diving
  • • Underwater navigation
  • • Multilevel and computer diving
  • • Underwater Photography

Each Adventure Dive may be credited towards the corresponding PADI Specialty Diver course

4. Emergency First Response (EFR)

Take a step toward emergency preparedness and meet PADI Rescue Diver prerequisites with Emergency First Response. As one of the foremost international CPR and first aid training companies, Emergency First Response gives you the confidence to respond to medical emergencies — not just in the diving world, but in your every day world with your family, friends, neighbours and coworkers too. Emergency First Response courses encompass:

  • • CPR for adults, children and infants
  • • First aid for adults, children and infants

5. PADI Rescue Diver

Challenging and rewarding best describes the PADI Rescue Diver course. This course will expand your knowledge and experience level. Rescue Divers learn to look beyond themselves and consider the safety and well being of other divers. Although this course is challenging, it is a rewarding and fun way to build your confidence. Rescue Diver training will prepare you to prevent problems and, if necessary, manage dive emergencies. Many divers say this is the best course they’ve ever taken. You’ll cover:

Fun Dives

All dives are guided dives with a maximum ratio of four guests to one Instructor / Divemaster.

Our daily trips usually include two dives, along the coasts of either Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida. When conditions are favourable, adventures down to Manta Point or Secret Manta and also to the east coast of Nusa Penida are possible.

Lunch is provided on the boat during the surface interval, along with mineral water & hot drinks.

We continue to explore the three islands of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida, looking for some of the very best dive sites around Bali. Having discovered a new Manta feeding area, we now have 18 different dive sites to which we take guests, and are still finding new spots where we see some incredible creatures. With our professional and highly valued local staff, we offer first class diving in spectacular and exciting environments.

Diving around the three islands has a reputation from guidebooks as being difficult because of the currents. Most of the dives are drift dives, but the advantage that we have being based on Lembongan, is that we can dive around high tides which minimize the current. This means we often have calm waters in which to enjoy the spectacular coral and marine life.
